#JustSharing: The Law Of The Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck'.

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally, just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

#JustSharing: I Want To Change The World

I wanted to change the world

When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world.

I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation.

When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family.

Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.

The CHANGE we all crave and agitate for begins with us. You can't give what you don't have.

#JustSharing: Knowing Importance of Hardwork and Value for Money

Once upon a time there lived a very wealthy and wise man named Abdullah. He had two sons. His oldest son was very hard-working and used to earn his living all by himself. He never asked his father for any money. The youngest son of Abdullah was a very lazy guy and was unwilling to work at all and used to spend all his time enjoying with friends. He used to spend his father’s money and lead a very luxurious life like a prince. Abdullah got too much worried about his youngest son’s situation and thought he badly needed to do something about it. So one day Abdullah called his youngest son and told him to go to the market and earn some money and put a condition that if he was unable to bring home any money he would not be allowed to have his dinner that night. Out of fear that his father would not allow him to eat his dinner, the youngest son went to the market, but didn’t find any work. He came home and went to his mother and told her about it. His mother could not see him sad so she gave him N200.

In the evening when Abdullah asked his youngest son to show what he had earned that day, the son quickly presented the N200 note and told father that was his earnings of the day. Abdullah was a very wise man and from his experience he guessed that the money was given to him by his mother. So Abdullah told the boy to tear the note and throw it in the pool. The son did as he was instructed by his father.

The next day Abdullah sent his wife to her friend’s place and told his youngest son to go to the market and earn some money with the warning of being deprived of the night’s dinner. This time the son with a very sad face went to his eldest brother and told him his situation. His eldest brother was very kind and loved his brother very much so he took a N100 note from his pocket and handed to his brother.

In the evening when Abdullah asked his youngest son to show his earning, he promptly showed him the N100 note that his brother gave him. As Abdullah was a man of wisdom he suspected this time the son might have got the money from his brother so Abdullah told his son to throw the money in the pool. The son did just as his father told him to do.

The next day Abdullah sent his eldest son on a business trip and told his youngest son to go to market and earn some money. This time as there was no one at home who could help him the son went to a shop in the market and asked for some work. The shopkeeper told him to transfer goods from the van into the shop. The son could not refuse and by the time he finished with all the work he was sweating profusely. He was soaked in sweat from head to toe and his feet were trembling and he felt excess pain in his body.

The son returned home in the evening with N50 in his hand. His first earning of his life. He showed the money to his father. Abdullah told his son to throw the money in the pool. The son was shocked and aghast and cried out, “O Father!  How can you ask me to throw the money into the pool ? This is my hard-earned money. My entire body is aching and you are asking me to throw this money? ”

The father replied with a big smile, “Son, on previous two occasions you didn’t once hesitate to throw the money into the pool because it was not your money and you just didn’t care, but this time you got so horrified and couldn’t even imagine throwing your hard-earned money in the pool. That’s exactly how a person feels when he sees his fruits of labour being wasted.

The son realized how wrong he was and he learnt a great lesson and got to know the importance of hard-work and the value of money. He promised to his father and himself that he would never by lazy and earn money on his own so he could enjoy the fruits of his labour in the right way.

As humans we value and cherish whatever we laboured to acquire so much. What would you say you learnt from the story above?

#JustSharing: What Have You Prepared For Hereafter?

Once upon a time there lived a wealthy old man in Dubai. He had a luxurious lifestyle. He had built his mansions, apartments, hotels and offices all around the World in US, UK, Malaysia, Switzerland and many other Countries of the World.

He had a servant who had served him for many years. He used to address his servant by the name “Dumbo”. One day the old man called his servant and told him “Dumbo, I am going on a trip to New Zealand tomorrow and will be returning after a month.” His servant asked him “That’s a very long period where are you going to stay there, Sir?” The old man burst into laughter and replied, “Oh Dumbo ! Don’t you know I have my mansions in almost every country in the World? Of course I am going to stay in my beautiful palace that I had built when I last visited New Zealand.”

The old man returned from his trip. Some other time he had another trip abroad so he called his servant, “Dumbo, come here and pack the bags. I am going to leave for Sweden tomorrow.” Dumbo asked “Where are you going to stay there, Sir?” The old man again laughed and replied, “Dumbo, don’t you know I have 2 mansions and 3 hotels in Sweden?”

Several years passed and the old man fell ill. His health deteriorated with time and finally he was on his death bed. He called his servant and said, “Dumbo, come here! My health is worsening day by day and I think I am heading towards my afterlife.” Dumbo jokingly asked ”Where are you going to stay there, Sir?”

The old man burst into tears and told “Oh Dumbo, all these years I was so proud of myself for I have had properties in nearly every country of the world. I have built for myself great mansions, hotels, mansions, palaces, but I just never thought of building anything for myself in the hereafter. I was a wealthy man in this life, but now I realize that I am going to be a very poor man in the hereafter. Probably you might as well have a good place to live in the hereafter because you were happy with whatever God gave you and you were grateful to Him with whatever little you had, while I never thanked God for the luxurious life I lead living in this world and instead thought I was wealthy because of my hard-work. My pride and arrogance didn’t let me thank God for all that I had. I called you Dumbo all these years, but in fact I have been the dumb one, the foolish one”

-----------------------------------------
Dear Readers,
Time to think, what have we prepared for our hereafter? We spent our time, wealth and health and everything for building and securing our own and our family’s future. What have we done to secure our hereafter? Our destination is hereafter which is eternal, while this life is just an intermediate station we don’t stay here forever.

#JustSharing: The Mouse Trap

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. "What food might this contain?" the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The pig sympathized, but said "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The cow said "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house - like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient. But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many! people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember: when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another. Each of us is a vital thread in another person's tapestry.

We are all connected!
